The film sought not only to capture historical events but also to reveal the inner world of the characters, showcasing the complexity of their relationships and the political intrigues of the era.

The relevance of this study stems from the fact that ‘Diana de Poitiers’ serves as a unique bridge between historical drama and contemporary cinematic art. The film allows the viewer to gain an understanding of the socio-political realities of the 16th century, the struggle for power, and the influence of individuals on the course of history. An analysis of the film helps to understand how cinema reflects and reworks historical memory, as well as the extent to which a contemporary audience is prepared to engage with complex, multifaceted portrayals of the past.

The paper examines various aspects of the film. Firstly, attention is paid to the historical context of Diane de Poitiers’ life — the social milieu of France at that time, the relationship between the nobility and the crown, as well as the key events that formed the basis of the plot. Secondly, the process of making the film is examined: the choice of director, screenplay, casting and filming locations, which allows for an assessment of the level of authenticity and artistic expression.

Particular attention is devoted to analysing the plot and narrative techniques used to reveal the character of Diane and other characters. This includes an examination of the psychological depth of the characters, the motivations behind their actions, and the role of women in the Renaissance era. In addition to Diana herself, the study examines other key figures in the film, their interactions, and their symbolic significance to the overall narrative.

Critical reviews and research help to identify where the director deviates from historical facts for the sake of dramatic effect, and where, conversely, he achieves a high degree of historical accuracy. This section examines both criticism from historians and feedback from film professionals, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the film’s artistic value.

Finally, attention is paid to the technical aspects of film production: the use of costumes, sets, cinematography and musical score. An analysis of these components demonstrates how technical elements enhance the atmosphere of the era and help to create a cohesive artistic work.

Thus, this study explores the many facets of the film ‘Diana de Poitiers’, enabling a comprehensive assessment not only of the historical significance of the plot but also of its artistic realisation within the context of contemporary cinema.

The historical context of Diane de Poitiers’ life

Diane de Poitiers, born in 1499 or 1500, occupied a prominent position in 16th-century French society thanks to her lineage and personal qualities.

She belonged to the noble Poitiers family, who were related to the ruling Valois dynasty, which gave her access to high society and the culture of court life. Following her mother’s death in early childhood, Diane was raised under the care of Anne de Beaujeu, daughter of King Louis XI, which contributed to her thorough upbringing and education, which included the study of Latin and Greek, as well as law and rhetoric. This education, unusual for women of the time, combined with her physical activity and interest in anatomy, set Diane apart from her peers and gave rise to numerous rumours and legends surrounding her [9].

At a young age, around 13–15 years old, Diane was married to Louis de Bresse, a much older aristocrat who had his own connections to the royal family, being the grandson of Charles VII and his mistress Agnès Sorel. During their marriage, they had two daughters. Following her husband’s death in 1531, Diana inherited his titles and lands with the approval of King Francis I — an exceptional move for a woman of that era, which underscores her unique position at court and her influence [10].

Most notably, Diane went down in history as the favourite of King Henry II. Their relationship began long before his accession to the throne, and during his reign, Diane effectively played the role of a de facto queen, wielding considerable influence over the monarch’s political and personal decisions. At this time, the king’s official wife, Catherine de’ Medici, found herself sidelined due to her rivalry with Diane, which became the subject of numerous rumours and cultural interpretations, whilst the story itself became entangled in a dramatic conflict that emerged as one of the most recognisable tales of the 16th-century French court [15].

Diana proved herself not only as a beautiful woman, but also as a shrewd political figure, skilled at managing her position and forging strategic alliances. Her passion for hunting and physical activity, combined with her profound knowledge, made Diana a complex and contradictory figure. These characteristics embodied the spirit of the times and the social transformations of the Renaissance in France, when the significance of the individual and culture influenced political processes more clearly than before [20].

The image of Diane de Poitiers, rich in historical detail and legend, had a significant influence on France’s subsequent cultural memory and became a source of inspiration for literature and art. In cinema, she appears not only as a historical figure, but also as a symbol of the struggle for power, beauty and the intellectual strength of women in the male-dominated world of the 16th century. This makes the study of the historical context of her life a necessary step towards a deep understanding of both the era itself and the cinematic image formed on its basis.

Fig 1

Fig 2

Figure 1 , 2 — Portraits of Diane de Poitiers and her contemporaries, reflecting the historical context of 16th-century France

The Making of the Film ‘Diana de Poitiers’

The making of the 1956 film ‘Diana de Poitiers’ represented one of Hollywood’s most ambitious attempts to recreate the atmosphere of the Renaissance and convey the drama of a historical figure’s personal life. The film was directed by David Miller, who was working with major studios at the time, ensuring the project received a high level of technical and artistic support. Producer Edwin H. Knopf oversaw all stages of production, striving to maintain a balance between historical accuracy and entertainment value. The screenplay was written by Christopher Isherwood — a renowned writer who adapted John Erskine’s novella, lending the plot literary depth and expressiveness [2].

One of the key elements was the work of cinematographer Robert H. Plank, who utilised the then-cutting-edge CinemaScope and Eastmancolor technologies to create rich visual imagery, making the film particularly impressive for audiences of the 1950s. The musical score by Miklós Rózsa heightened the emotional intensity, whilst the costumes designed by Walter Plunkett reflected the authentic style of the 16th-century French court, embellishing the on-screen reality and adding historical accuracy to the visuals. The lead role was played by Lana Turner — one of the most famous actresses of the time, whose charisma and screen presence shaped the image of Diane de Poitiers in the minds of the American audience [2].

In contrast, the 2022 French miniseries *Diane de Poitiers*, directed by José Dayan, was an attempt at a contemporary historical exploration with an emphasis on the psychological and social aspects of the protagonist’s life. The lead role was played by Isabelle Adjani, who possesses dramatic experience and is capable of conveying the character’s complex inner dynamics. The series demonstrates a deep attention to detail regarding Diane’s origins, her relationship with King Henry II of Valois, and her struggle for influence. The series also features Hugo Becker and Samuel Labarthe, reflecting a commitment to creating a multi-layered narrative with a strong acting duo [19][7].

The production process for the miniseries involved meticulous location scouting and costume design, creating an authentic period atmosphere whilst maintaining a focus on contemporary cinematic standards. The set design and visual effects reinforced the historical setting, whilst the attention to detail in the script allowed the characters to be explored more deeply than in traditional historical dramas. The series’ release in 2022 demonstrated contemporary France’s keen interest in reinterpreting its historical symbols and expanding the cultural dialogue about the past [1][6].

Thus, despite their shared theme, both projects reflect different approaches to portraying Diane de Poitiers. The 1956 film focused on the glamour and dramatic conflicts of the era, utilising the latest technology of the time, which shaped the artistic style and audience expectations of Hollywood’s Golden Age. At the same time, the 2022 miniseries emphasised the historical complexity and multifaceted nature of the character, infusing it with contemporary ideas about the role of women and power.

The influence of the creative process on the final product was evident in the fact that each production managed to carve out its own niche in the audience’s perception: the film became a cult classic historical drama with recognisable characters and cinematic brilliance, whilst the series served as a platform for an in-depth exploration of Diana’s personality and the historical circumstances, broadening our understanding of the figure and providing a foundation for further dialogue between history and art.

Figure 2 — Stills from the film *Diana de Poitiers*, illustrating the production process and the actors’ involvement

Figure 3 — Stills from the film *Diana de Poitiers*, illustrating the production process and the actors’ involvement

The plot and narrative of the film

The narrative of the miniseries *Diana de Poitiers* (2022) centres on the life of the protagonist from the moment of the tragic death of her husband, Louis de Bréze, when Diana was 31 years old. From this point on, the viewer is shown not only Diane’s desire to preserve her youth and beauty, but also her gradual rise to become the favourite of King Henry II of Valois. The narrative unfolds chronologically, demonstrating how cunning strategies, physical stamina and legendary beauty regimens — ice baths, horse rides, special oils and a strict diet — enable a woman to remain at the centre of attention and power at court for a long time [8].

The storyline carefully interweaves the political and personal aspects of Diane’s life. In addition to her romantic relationship with the king, the series depicts the complex intrigues of court life, her rivalry with Queen Eleanor, and the difficult position of Elizabeth de’ Medici. Through dialogue and dynamic scenes, their influence on one another and on the surrounding social and political landscape of 16th-century France is revealed. Diana’s ability to maintain control of the situation, using her intellect and charm in circumstances where a woman’s power and status were constantly being tested, becomes key [16].

The series pays close attention to the details of the Renaissance era: real historical locations are used—the towns of Noisy-le-Grand and Blois, and the châteaux of Ambleville, Aune and Chambord—which enhances the sense of immersion in the atmosphere of the past. Costumed scenes and the accurate depiction of court rituals illustrate the social context and reinforce the historical authenticity of the narrative. This visual element serves not merely as a backdrop, but as a key component in revealing the character of the protagonist and her entourage [7].

The plot offers a deep exploration of Diane’s personal qualities: a combination of physical beauty, resilience in the face of trials, and pragmatism. She emerges as a heroine who does not shy away from the cruelty of political games, but actively participates in them, demonstrating leadership skills and an ability to manipulate situations. The story demonstrates her influence not only on the king but also on the political climate of France, which helps to understand the significance of the role of a favourite at the court of the 16th century.

Alongside the main narrative thread, secondary plotlines are woven in, allowing for a broader exploration of the era — the relationships between various noble figures, and the inner struggles of Diane and those around her. This creates a multi-faceted portrait that goes beyond the scope of a conventional biographical drama and becomes a profound exploration of personality and the era.

Turning to the characterisation of the main protagonists, it is worth noting that in the miniseries, Diane de Poitiers is portrayed as a woman who is both young and ageless, whose charm and intellect are closely intertwined with a meticulous attention to her appearance. Actress Isabelle Adjani embodies this complexity with the aid of modern digital technology, which allows her to maintain the character’s youthfulness despite the gap between her biological and on-screen ages [8]. Her king, Henry II, is portrayed not only as an authoritative figure, but also as a man captivated by his favourite, balancing personal feelings and state affairs in a complex political environment.

Thus, the film’s plot and narrative are built on an organic blend of personal drama, politics and historical colour, allowing us to explore Diane de Poitiers not only as a character, but also as a symbol of the era and of female power.

The portrayal of Diane de Poitiers in the film

The character of Diane de Poitiers in the 2022 miniseries of the same name is portrayed as a complex, multifaceted and refined portrait of a woman who demonstrates strength and the ability to survive in the patriarchal society of the 16th century. Despite the advanced age of the actress Isabelle Adjani, who plays the lead role, the character of Diane appears on screen as a young and attractive woman in her early thirties, thanks to the use of digital technology and special filters. Filming in dim light, with her face partially obscured, and the play of light helped to soften the actress’s age-related features, creating the illusion of her unfading beauty [8].

Diana is portrayed as a woman possessing not only physical attractiveness but also a sharp mind, capable of mastering the art of intrigue, utilising her knowledge of preserving youth and ingenious beauty regimens. This multifaceted nature of the character underscores her position as a favourite and influential figure at the French court: the character balances personal feelings, political ambitions and social necessity, defending her place in a world where women were rarely granted such power and respect [16].

Particular attention is paid to portraying Diane as a figure who defies the social norms of her time. Her image embodies beauty, strength and the ability to survive, which lends the character depth and makes her relevant to the modern viewer. Preserving her youth is perceived not only as an external attribute, but also as a symbol of her ability to remain significant and influential throughout two decades of her relationship with King Henry II [13].

Viewers’ perception of Diana’s character is largely shaped by Isabelle Adjani’s charisma and the technical choices made by the series’ creators. The actress’s uncharacteristic age did not hinder her portrayal of a young and energetic character; on the contrary, it added an extra dimension of mystique and mystery to Diana’s figure. This portrayal is complemented by subplots and characters such as Nostradamus and Queen Eleanor, which immerse the viewer in the complex political and social atmosphere of the era [8].

Thus, the portrayal of Diane de Poitiers in the film represents a combination of the historical prototype and an artistic interpretation that lends the heroine contemporary relevance and depth. She emerges as a symbol of female strength and independence, whilst remaining enigmatic and elusive to those around her — it is precisely this combination that makes her character memorable and evokes empathy in the audience.

Santhi Jayasekera, PhD, Cinematography, Film Director, Introduction The film *Diana de Poitiers* tells the story of one of the most famous figures of the French

[14,13

post-1168","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-arts-culture","category-cinematography","three-columns
["GET
