Abstract. The article examines the problem of the level of volitional self-regulation of university students and the impact of the Chinese Shuaijiao struggle on the dynamics of changes in this level.
Keywords: physical education, university students, volitional self-regulation, perseverance, self-control, Chinese Shuaijiao wrestling
Relevance. The formation of a culture and values of a healthy lifestyle as the basis for sustainable development of society and quality of life is one of the tasks of the state. [3]
In educational institutions, physical culture is of great importance for students. In addition to physical development, physical culture contributes to the development of individual psychological qualities and abilities, such as willpower, perseverance, discipline, determination, the desire for self-improvement and self-development, and self-confidence.
Eastern martial arts, as a non-traditional form of physical activity, allow you to control your body as a harmonious whole and help develop qualities necessary for achieving life goals, such as perseverance and self-control. [2]
Research objective. In this study, we set out to investigate the impact of physical education classes incorporating elements of Chinese shuai jiao wrestling on the level of volitional self-regulation in students using the methodology developed by A.V. Zverkova and E.V. Eidman. [1]
Research methods. Students in the control (n=60) and experimental (n=60) groups were asked to complete an anonymous survey at the beginning of the academic year and at the end of the year. Students in the control group participated in a traditional physical education program, while students in the experimental group participated in a program that incorporated elements of Chinese shuaijiao wrestling. According to the methodology of A.V. Zverkova and E.V. Eidman, the level of development of volitional self-regulation can be characterized in general and separately by such character traits as perseverance and self-control.
Perseverance in mastering technique, developing physical endurance, and coordination requires tremendous patience and tenacity from athletes. By overcoming difficulties, they learn not to give up in the face of adversity and to pursue their goals no matter what.
Self-control is the ability to act sensibly and deliberately, even in stressful situations. From the very beginning of training, Eastern martial arts teach how to restrain aggression, train the ability to control emotions, and not succumb to stress.

Table 1. Level of volitional self-regulation among students at the beginning of the experiment.
Table 1 presents data on the number of students with a certain level of volitional self-regulation according to scales such as the general scale, persistence, and self-control at the beginning of the experiment.
Based on these data, it can be concluded that the level of volitional self-regulation of students in the control and experimental groups on the scales – general, persistence, and self-control – at the beginning of the experiment was approximately the same.
During physical education classes with students in the experimental group, exercise complexes were used, consisting of basic elements of Chinese shuaijiao wrestling, self-defense techniques, as well as attacking and defensive actions with hands and feet. One of the main objectives of these exercise complexes, along with improving the physical fitness and motor activity of students, was to raise the emotional background of the class and develop moral and volitional qualities.
The experimental classes with students included: various types of movements; preparatory general gymnastic exercises; exercises to strengthen the muscles of the arms, legs, and torso; exercises for flexibility and agility; and special exercises from the methodology of teaching Chinese shuaijiao wrestling.

Table 2. Level of volitional self-regulation of students at the end of the experiment.
Table 2 presents data on the number of students with a certain level of volitional self-regulation on scales such as the general scale, persistence, and self-control at the end of the experiment.
Based on these data, it can be concluded that the level of volitional self-regulation of students in the control and experimental groups on the scales – general, persistence, and self-control – changed significantly (according to Student’s t-test (p<0.05)) compared to the initial data.
Results. In the experimental group, the indicators of high levels of volitional self-regulation on the scales of general, persistence, and self-control increased by 19.9, 27.3, and 18.8%, respectively. Low levels decreased on the same scales by 21.6, 28.3, and 22.2%, respectively. The average levels of volitional self-regulation among students in the experimental group, as well as the levels among students in the control group on all three scales, changed insignificantly.
